Funding Options

We understand that navigating the financial aspects of nursing home care can be complex and a challenging time for families. There are several funding options available to assist individuals and families in managing these costs. Understanding these options will ensure that you or your loved ones make informed decisions and receive the necessary care without undue financial strain.

The Fair Deal Scheme (Nursing Homes Support Scheme)

The Fair Deal Scheme is a Government initiative designed to make nursing home care affordable for everyone. Under the Fair Deal Scheme, you contribute to the cost of your care based on your means. The rest of the cost is covered by the State.

Application Process:

  • Care Needs Assessment: Conducted by healthcare professionals, the assessment will determine if nursing home care is appropriate or if alternative support can enable you/your loved one to continue living at home safely.
  • Financial Assessment: This assessment evaluates income and assets to calculate the needed contribution. On average, people contribute 80% of their income and 7.5% of the value of their assets annually.

Nursing Home Loan (Ancillary state Support)

If a significant portion of your/your loved one’s assets is/are tied up in property (e.g. your/their primary residence), a Nursing Home Loan offers the option to defer the portion of your/their contribution that is related to these assets. The HSE pays this amount on your/their behalf. This amount is to be repaid from your/your loved one’s estate after your/their passing. This funding option means you/they do not need to sell your/their home to afford care.
